Sony says (via
Andriasang) that the new firmware update will be released 'by the end of the year'. This
confirms reports that the previously-released
PS3 3D firmware update (version 3.30) back in April only added support for 3D gaming, and not 3D Blu-ray movie discs.
The vagueness of the update's release suggests that it's likely to arrive later than the first 3D Blu-ray movies, which are expected out in the summer starting with a 3D release of animated movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
This would leave PS3 owners left unable to watch the first 3D movies on their shiny new £2000+ 3DTVs until Sony releases the new firmware. Dedicated 3D Blu-ray movie players are already out.
PS3 already supports 3D gaming though and, as
confirmed by Sony Japan earlier today, PS3 get its first 3D games on June 10.
SCEE president Andrew House said recently that videogames will 'lead the way' in popularising stereoscopic 3D technology.
