Batman: Arkham Asylum (Releases 08/26) The art looks gorgeous, no matter how creepy Gordon's mustache is While
originally intended to be released during the Summer, Eidos and
Asylum’s caped crusader project was pushed back in order to fine tune
and work more on the game’s mechanics.
With
an all-new story revolving around Batman and many of his villains as
well as the return of many of the original voices from the animated
series this may in fact become the first Batman game to be better than
previous attempts at turning this classic comic into a successful video
game.
Expect tons of fighting, cool
gadgets and what looks to be a dark yet beautiful backdrop as you
attempt to escape the confines of Arkham Asylum and the villains hidden
within.
Borderlands (Releases 10/20)Vehicular combat is just one of many draws to this amazing RPG/Shooter hybrid Promising
an innovative new gameplay mechanic, Borderlands is really turning out
to be one of the games I’m looking most forward to this fall. Up to
4-player Cooperative either over Xbox Live or split-screen at home and
countless ways to customize and strengthen your character makes this
game a sought after treasure for those who enjoy RPG’s and First-Person
Shooters.
Combining hand-drawn models
with textured pieces as well as thousands of different weapons,
abilities, and equipment will give players something beautiful to look
at and loot-hounds hours of enjoyment.
Throw
in vehicular combat and multiple class types and the search for the
Alien Vault on the planet Pandora is looking like it may be one of the
big hits of year.
Alpha Protocol (Releases 10/06) Though not the best looking game of the bunch, Alpha Protocol will probably be the most versatile Another
hybrid RPG, this time a mix of espionage/tactical and role-playing,
Alpha Protocol looks like it’s going to be a sleeper hit of the year.
Everything
you do affects the outcome and feel of the game as you sneak,
assassinate, and spy within each mission of the game. A customizable
character interface and objectives allow you to choose how you’d like
to complete the mission and accept the consequences as they follow.
With
multiple upgrade and customization paths, a sleek John Woo style of art
and combat, and an in-game time limit that doesn’t allow for hours of
thought as you attempt to decide on if you’ll save the target or send
him to his doom, this futuristic Japanese espionage thriller will allow
your mind to flow freely and become the spy you’ve always wanted to be.
Brutal Legend (Releases 10/13) Crazy characters (both friendly and non) are a staple of Tim Schaefer's Games - Brutal Legend is no exception A
game that has suffered more problems with producers and publishers than
any title should, Brutal Legend, a title from the mind of Tim Schaefer
(creator of Psychonauts and the Grim Fandango series) is looking like
it may actually come out this time and may just be one of the better
titles being released this Fall.
Roadie
Eddie Briggs (voiced by Jack Black) is sucked into the world of rock in
order to rid it of the evil that is slowly growing inside of it.
Featuring the voices and music of numerous classic heavy metal legends
and a world straight out of every heavy metal cover from the 70’s this
part music game, part adventure game, part troop control game is going
to rock your socks off with its quirky storyline and unforgettable
characters
Boasting “more leather and
chrome than any other game in existence” this long-awaited title is
looking like all of the time spent in delays has paid off and brought
about a killer new game for Schaefer and Electronic Arts.
Dragon Age: Origins (Releases 10/20)Dragon Age is quickly shaping up to be the Baldur's Gate of 2009 - dark, beautiful, loads of fun
Called
Bioware’s “Dark Heroic Fantasy” game, the makers of Knights of the Old
Republic and Baldur’s gate attempt to mix previous playstyles from both
games all the while providing an epic story and a dark fantasy setting
that players will explore.
Featuring a
morality system labeled as the “Origin” system, the motivations and
methods that players use throughout their travels in Dragon Age will
affect the characters that join their cause and how the world looks and
acts. Like Borderlands, this game boasts a massive class inventory
system that has thousands of weapons, items, and equipment for you to
customize your characters and their abilities.
Be
ready for a gritty, bloody journey through Orzammar this Fall as you
begin on an epic quest for salvation, for glory, or for the destruction
of the very world you inhabit.
Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Releases 09/08) The most colorful of the six = but don't let that fool you into thinking this game is going to be easy
A
game that is already taking over the Wiis of most Japanese players,
Muramasa is a 2D epic by Vanillaware that seems to house a simple to
grasp yet fun to master combat system, an epic storyline, and beautiful
artwork all on Nintendo’s little white box.
Also
within this game comes a lot of interactivity with your character and
the items that you get throughout your travels. The ability to equip
three different blades, all of which you can use interchangeably
through the story, allows for massive combinations and abilities on
those who dare to stand in your way.
Holding
you back from going John Rambo though is a vitality gauge not on
yourself but on the blades. They constantly take damage as you are hit,
use special attacks, or even just kill an enemy with regular blows
forcing you to strategize and plan out how and when you’re going to use
them. Items scattered throughout the world allow you to repair and
power up your trusty weapons to give them new abilities and longer
durability which will allow you to stay in the fight longer and
dispatch of your foes with more style.
This
is the one game on the Wii (that isn’t a remake or a sequel) that I’m
looking forward to. The artwork is gorgeous and the revival of the 2D
genre is a welcome in my eyes.
